2015 Walsh Block Syrah

Mike Bennie The Wine Front

Owen Latta has recently been crowned by Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine as ‘Young Winemaker Of The Year’, but you could remove the ‘Young’ in some respects, such is his form and tempo for his craft. He does have some seriously unique and well-tended vineyards on hand, but the craft, at a relatively tender age, shown in his work, is pretty extraordinary, as is the breadth of expressions he aces, from classic to off-beat. This is syrah from ‘over the fence’ of the estate. It sees 15% whole bunch and a whole lotta love.

Soulful, supple, detailed red. It’s so moreish – one of those wines that drags you back for another look at perfume, texture, weight, spice, fruit character, and evolves over time you drink. There’s brambles and sour cherry, blackcurrant, anise, flinty notes in bouquet and palate, a symphony of things set to just shy of medium weight, shaped by featherweight tannins and lifted on cool acidity. Such pleasure here. And so much.
