This third vineyard story follows a more recent chapter in that continuing evolution — Two Mile Hill.
The story began in 2015 with a conversation. Karel Schaefer had developed a growing fascination with Chardonnay and spoke of planting a vineyard of his own. What began as an idea soon became a shared project built on friendship, curiosity and a genuine love of the variety. By November 2017, the first vines were planted.
Today, Two Mile Hill sits just seven kilometres from Eastern Peake. The vineyard spans four and a half acres and is planted to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling. The Chardonnay occupies a beautiful site of rich red volcanic soil with a south to south-west aspect. Elevated and exposed, it enjoys its own unique growing conditions while remaining close enough that you can see the Eastern Peake vineyard from the crest of the hill.
Despite the short distance between the two sites, Two Mile Hill moves to its own rhythm. Flowering and harvest typically arrive one to two weeks ahead of Eastern Peake, helping shape wines with a distinct personality and sense of place.
The vineyard is farmed as a true partnership between the Schaefer family and ourselves, with a shared focus on quality, soil health and allowing the site to steadily find its voice.
While still young, Two Mile Hill is already showing remarkable promise. The wines carry bright fruit, fine texture and a mineral edge that speaks clearly of their volcanic origins. With each passing vintage, the character of the site becomes more defined.
It is exciting to watch this vineyard continue to evolve alongside our own young Chardonnay plantings at Eastern Peake. Both are reminders that great vineyards are never built overnight. They are the result of patience, shared effort and a long-term belief in the land.
