We are thrilled to host artist David Rosendale as part of the Ballarat International Foto Biennale and offer Artist Workshops
An immersive series created in Dja Dja Wurrung country, Hepburn Regional Park and the Wombat State Forest, emerging from the global pandemic.
Daily wanderings in the forests of Hepburn and Daylesford, uncovered metaphors to the many themes of struggle and reinvention, so vivid in art history, so present in our consciousness at the time.
The region reveals rich and varied histories, yet this body of work represents the landscape as experienced firsthand. There are contrasting sentiments, from the claustrophobic perception of restriction post pandemic, to the excitement and liberation of finally being “En Plein Air”.
This series moves beyond documentation, offering an intimate and painterly exploration of personal connection and resilience. There is noticeable scarcity of human presence, focusing solely on the land’s narrative – the sun rising each day and lifting the landscape from its darkness. Deeper ancestral footprints to this region were uncovered, evoking an intangible sense of being “exactly where I need to be”. The notion of “wandering”, “homecoming” and an enduring connection to “place” resonating. An accompanying Landscape Workshop is also offered.
